In which thicknesses are polarizers available?

Linear polarizing film is generally manufactured to be 180µm (0.18mm) thick. It is possible to laminate polarizing filters to achieve different thicknesses according to customer requirements. The carrier material can be TAC or PMMA. The typical final thicknesses of the polarizers are 0.18mm, 0.4mm, 0.75mm, 2mm and 3mm.

Are the polarizers shipped with protection foil?

All Polarizers are shipped with foil on both sides to protect the material during transport and any further processing. Depending on the filter type, different protection foils are used. Please ensure that you remove the foil before using the polarizer!

Are the optical qualities affected by the thickness of the polarizer?

The polarizing properties of the filters is unaffected by the thickness of the carrier material, which remains optically neutral.

Can I cut the polarizing film to a specific dimension?

All polarizing film sheets can be cut using tools such as scissors or a guillotine. However, care should be taken when punching holes in self-adhesive film.

Is the polarizing film suitable for use with laser equipment?

ITOS polarizing film is generally not suitable for use with laser equipment. However, we have customers who successfully use our polarizers with low-power lasers operating in the visible light spectrum. However, it is up to the customer to determine the usability of our products in such cases. While we guarantee the consistent quality of our products, we obviously cannot accept any claims for material damages related to such use.

Are there temperature restrictions for the polarizing film?

Polarizing film consists of an iodine-based component which provides the polarizing properties. If the temperature of the film exceeds 80°C the polarizing component will be damaged.

For applications up to approx. 100°C we recommend the polarizing film type XP40HT as this possesses a modified polarizing component that is more heat resistant. However, be aware that the polarizing function is slightly less efficient.

How can I determine the polarization direction of the polarizing film?

The polarizing direction, also known as the conducting direction, always runs parallel to the first mentioned dimension of the polarizing film. For example, a film with the dimension 500mm x 1000mm would have the polarizing direction running parallel to the 500mm side. Square polarizers have the polarizing direction indicated by way of a sticker on the protection film. In both cases the tolerance is +/- 2°.

How do I select the correct linear polarizing filter for my application?

For most applications you can use our linear polarizing film XP42 which, incidentally, is the most popular product in our program. For more demanding applications up to approx. 100°C we recommend the polarizing film type XP40HT. Depending upon your specific application requirements, the polarizing film type XP44 permits the maximum possible light transmission in high temperature operating conditions, whereas the film type XP42HE provides the maximum possible contrast.

Are the polarizers available as a glass lamination?

We can laminate the polarizing film XP42 in glass. The standard dimensions and thicknesses can be found in our price list. We can also laminate other types of film in glass according your specifications. For optical capture systems the linear polarizer type LPG has both sides of the filter precisely faced and is optionally available with an anti-reflective coating.

What are the maximum dimensions of the polarizing film that you supply? Does it come on a roll?

Depending on the type of polarizing film required, we can supply sizes up to 500mm x 1000mm and 600mm x 900mm. The film type XP38 is also available 600mm wide on a 5m roll.

Are polarizing filters available for the UV range?

Our polarizing filters are designed for use in the visible light spectrum (i.e. 400-750nm). Protection is provided against damage from UV light through the use of a special UV stabilizer, since polarization is not technically possible for the light spectrum below 400nm.

Are polarizing filters available for the IR range?

The polarizing filter XP38IR is designed for the extended light spectrum of 450-800nm and is therefore suitable for “near IR” applications.
